Last Call for Paraders

Megan is putting the final touches on the parade line up for the Calico Christmas Parade in Grantville on Saturday afternoon, December 13. She's sounded the call for more walkers, cyclers, riders, and whatevers to let her know if you want to be part of the fun.

Just to clarify my earlier posts - there is no Calico Christmas "festival" per se this year but there IS a parade and I've received word that Smokey Road Middle School IS planning to come and sing for us again! Hooray! Look for details here in the coming days.

Kia Jobs News

Lots of folks have asked me about working for Kia. (I think being a pizza lady is a lot like being a bartender...people talk to me about everything.)

I have a contact in Kia HR who confirms that the applications received are actually being reviewed by real human beings and not simply sorted by a computer program looking for key words. Considering the number of applications they have, that's quite an undertaking! Another friend tells me he recently heard back from Kia several months after submitting an application...so there is hope for those of you who have applied there!

According to their website, Kia is not accepting any more applications for hourly positions. However, they do post Salaried positions online when they are actively searching for candidates.

Also, Maryleigh Preston-McClure, a Grantville-based recruiter with CTR Professionals, is working on Kia searches for some of the more specific automotive industry professional/management positions. (Sorry, Maryleigh can't help you with entry-level or routine manufacturing jobs - she only places higher end professionals in finance and industry.)

Weary Voters Can Thank Philip Welch

Grantville voters can thank Philip Welch for those wooden benches set out along the polling line yesterday. Philips voluntarily put those together, knowing a record turnout was expected. He also does much more refined work. Custom pieces are available through ReUse the Past in Grantville. See some examples here

Calico Christmas - Update

My friends and I have enjoyed organizing Calico Christmas these past several years but due to a series of unfortunate events, Calico Christmas 2008 is hereby canceled.

However, prospective parade participants are still actively being organized by Megan Birchfield for a parade to take place either December 13 or other date determined by the City of Grantville.

Notice to Craft Vendors: Grantville resident Rebecca Campbell is also hosting a craft event on November 8 (see seperate G.Net news notice about that.) It is also my understanding that Bethlehem Baptist Church will be hosting a holiday craft fair - tentative date is December 13. Prospective vendors can contact me and I'll forward your information to the church organizers and anyone else I know hosting craft-selling opportunities. Nick's Pizzeria will be also selling locally made crafts and gifts throughout the holiday season. Please contact me if you would like to have your items available for sale at Nick's.

Given the state of the economy, Nick's/G.Net will instead be organizing a food-packaging activity for the Grantville Food Bank instead of presenting the annual Calico Banquet. Please let me know if you would like to help with this endeavor.

I Feel The Earth Move

Wow! It's been a morning of Earth Moving - earth moving machinery, that is - for me. We started out the day at the groundbreaking for Piedmont-Newnan Hospital up on Poplar Road. The hospital President presented a detailed review of the hospital and grounds at a Chamber of Commerce meeting several weeks back, and it is an impressive facility indeed! Wandering around the site today, it was especially nice to see big swaths of tree-covered land clearly marked off for preservation. We can count on our county's hospital to have more than just a few teeny-eeny saplings on its grounds.

On a similar tree-themed note, we drove through Post Street Park here in Grantville, checking out the progress on the new road being built to connect the current park to the new South Coweta Ball Park. While it was necessary to remove some trees on the south side of the park, we've still got lots of forestry between West Grantville Road and the ball fields.

Speaking of which, you been by the old ball field site on Colley Street lately? The new ball park is really taking shape! We can all look forward to lots of great sporting activity next spring. Our new County/City library will be built on the little road between the fields and Post Street park. Hopefully, we'll get news of that groundbreaking date soon.

There are even more big machines right here in my own corner of town today. The county recently scraped decades of debris and overgrowth off of Smith Street and the pavers started work this morning.

At the very first council meeting I attended after moving here in 2002, the city council approved use of SPLOST funds to repave Smith Street. Since then, I've been told many times that it was "up to the county" to step in and actually do the job. I am sure there is more to that story, but it's no surprise to me they are finally here. All of these projects are example of why county-city relations are so important for our community and {SWAK!} I'm thankful to Mayor Houston for her efforts in that regard. {Seriously, I'm not just kissing up to the Mayor, I actually believe what I'm saying here!}

Election Day in Grantville

Like everywhere else in the country, Grantville is likely to see record turnout at the polls on Tuesday. Keep in mind that our precinct was selected before the area's population explosion, and the voting line forms outside the building.

Once the post office is closed for the day, that parking lot will be available for use, but otherwise parking is very limited. If you live remotely within walking distance of city hall, walk!

Even if it is reasonably warm when you arrive, take a jacket with you in case the temperature drops while you're waiting! If you have to bring kids with you, it's imperative that they have a book or something else to keep them occupied. Otherwise they will get bored and drive you completely insane, and you'll end up voting for the wrong candidate!

Speaking of the line forming outside the building...you must be very clearly IN the line when the clock strikes 7 p.m. or you will not be permitted to vote. Be sure to allow plenty of time to find a place to park and make your way to wherever the end of the line is.

....And, this is especially important - memorize this number so you can call Nick's to order pizza for dinner: 770-583-2240. If you tell us the name and grade of your favorite Glanton Gator, 10% of your purchase will be donated to the Glanton School Media Center.

Small Biz Action in Grantville

Despite to economic downturn, some things in Grantville keep moving along. (yea!)

On
Saturday, November 1, Stephanie Rogers will host visitors at the Grand Opening of New Image Salon at the corner of LaGrange and Colley Streets, next door to Nick's. Drop by after ten a.m. to meet Stephanie and schedule appointments for tanning, manicures & pedicures, and hair cuts (or coloring, or perms...).

If you prefer an expert in African-American hair styling, see Barbara and Marilyn next door to New Image at Shay's House of Beauty. Barbara has been serving Grantville for over ten years and would love to meet some of our newer residents!

Course, you'll want new clothes to go with your 'new' hair, and you can find great deals at Grantville's Hidden Treasures across the street from our new Beauty Complex. And Scott Drake's new Coin Laundry next to Dollar General will help you keep those clothes clean and fresh. The laundry should open before the end of this month - stay tuned!

...psst....up on Highway 29, you'll also soon be seeing progress on the new Piedmont Hospital Grantville Clinic. Groundbreaking is set for mid-November. The Food Lion grocery store project has successfully navigated many of the pre-groundbreaking permit and approval processes and should be moving ahead soon as well! We recently noticed a new Feed Store on 29 across from Big M Hardware, and there are other prospective business owners looking at various sites in Grantville.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

We'll be distributing Halloween candy at Nick's Pizzeria tomorrow from 5 to 7 pm. Our neighboring businesses, Shay's and Grantville's Hidden Treasures, also plan to greet ghostie visitors, and you can snap pictures with the Great Pumpkin at Hidden Treasures. We are fairly certain you'll find some ghouls giving away treats at Grantville City Hall as well.

Wherever you are Trick and Treating (or socializing and partying) tomorrow, consider having some yummy Nick's Pizza for dinner!

We'll be delivering in our normal area, but you'll have more fun if you come to Nick's to carry-out or dine in. We'll have kids' activities in the dining room until around 7 pm, and a Halloween Costume Contest ( for adults!!) at 7:30ish.

In addition to our regular menu, we'll be serving Pumpkin Beer in honor of the occasion (kiddies can settle for orange soda!.)

ON SATURDAY, November 1, join us for a "Meet the City Manager" reception/lunch at Nick's around noon, during the Corner Market Monthly Yard Sale at Grantville's Hidden Treasures. We'll also be hosting visitors from a Model-A antique car club that afternoon. We welcome more yard sellers!

Jammin for Charity

A Note from Caryn at Cambridge House....

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this note regarding the Cambridge House Enrichment Center!!!

As you know, Cambridge House must look for a new location. Our landlords wish to rezone the property to commercial use, making it too expensive for us to continue leasing there and as we continue to grow and help families in Coweta and surrounding counties, we need to find a larger facility. Our current fundraiser is dedicated 100% to raising the finances necessary to help Cambridge House purchase our own location.

Today is the day before our "Jammin for Charity" contest. I am very excited about it and the opportunity for the kids/young adults in our community to have fun, win prizes and still make a difference in the lives of our Cambridge House clients!!!

If you have not registered your "guitar hero" for our contest, please pick up the phone and call Junction Lanes Family Entertainment Center at 770-683-2695 or stop by Junction Lanes - they are located at 141 Newnan Station Drive ! Contest starts at noon on Saturday (Oct 25th) and finishes when the "Last Guitar Licks Are Done!"

We are very blessed to have wonderful sponsors and they have made it possible to have fabulous prizes such as our

Grand Prize: Guitar Hero IV, World Tour

You can't buy it yet, but you can win it Saturday!!

We will be selling our "Jammin" t-shirts as well. Show your support and buy a shirt! Wearing your shirt to JCPenney starting Oct 26th –Nov 11th and they will give you 10% off your total purchase price!!
Remember, as a non-profit organization, your charitable donation is tax-deductible and graciously appreciated.
Please open the attachments to see the flyer and watch our Commercial – You can also find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvwMdAudfj8
I look forward to seeing you Saturday, October 25th - 12pm at Junction Lanes!!!

Hungry in (and around) Hogansville, Part Two

We don't know which of the many explanations we've heard are correct, but we do know that just a few short months after we heralded their arrival, Nothing' Fancy bakery and Seafood Junction restaurant in Hogansville are gone with the wind.

Dos Amigoes
has also suddenly closed up shop and Janie's Kitchen has folded.

The stalwarts Roger's Barbecue and International Cafe are still going strong, as is Hawg Heaven; we hear Pluck and Wing is going gangbusters with Karaoke on Saturday nights. Rumors are afoot that the old Hobo's location has been purchased and another restaurant is planned there.

Here in Grantville, Nick's Pizzeria and Casa Maria are still holding down the fort, and as I mentioned here already, County Line Cafe in Luthersville is serving Sunday breakfast during deer hunting season.

The restaurant industry is a hard one and that's especially true for small independents. I think I can safely speak for my professional colleagues when I say "thanks" to those of you who make a habit of visiting independent restaurants.

Welcome, New City Manager

Scott Starnes officially assumed office as Grantville's City Manager today. He's been in town since mid-October getting familiar with the city and learning some of the ropes from interim manager Weyman Jenkins.

I personally think Weyman's done an awesome job (I admit I'm partial to anyone who keeps the auditorium restoration on the radar, but he's done so much more!) as interim city manager but he's no doubt ready for a well-deserved break from the day to day challenges of city operations. Scott brings a new and interesting perspective that will help us keep moving ahead!

I'll be hosting a "meet the manager" gathering sometime in the very near future and hope many of you will come! In the meantime, you're sure to see Scott around town - he's our newest residents of Bohannon Woods just outside the historic district!

Jammin for Charity at Junction Lanes

If you are as old and unhip as I am, you may have no idea that the beloved "air guitar" of our youth has been transformed into the incredibly popular series of Guitar Hero video games.

I have been educated by several young friends recently, having signed on as a community sponsor for Jammin' for Charity, a Guiter Hero contest hosted by Junction Lanes on Saturday, October 25 to benefit Cambridge House (adult day care center.)

Apparently, my life will be incomplete if I don't ever play Guitar Hero. That's a problem since I don't have a Playstation, Xbox or Wii game system. But perhaps you do! Or perhaps you have a friend who loves to play Guitar Hero I, II, or III. In which case you need to know that the grand prize of the contest is Guitar Hero World Tour (also known as Guitar Hero IV,) which is scheduled for release on October 26.

If you know anyone who enjoys Guitar Hero, please encourage them to register for Jammin' for Charity by October 24 (late registration fee applies after Oct 21).

For more information, pick up a flyer at Nick's or call Junction Lanes at 770-683-2695.
